According to tradition, the monastery here dates from the arrival of King Kassapa, when the monks who were then living at Sigiriya were relocated to make room for the king’s palace; Kassapa constructed new dwellings and a temple here to recompense them. This monastery became a significant religious center and contributed to the area’s historical and cultural heritage.

The Climb to the SummitClimbing Pidurangala is a rewarding experience that appeals to nature lovers, adventure seekers, and history enthusiasts alike. However it is definitely not the easiest hike as you take around 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on your personal fitness level to summit the mountain.

Here, visitors can explore the temple ruins and see a massive reclining Buddha statue, which is believed to date back to the 5th century. When passing this section, you will need to cover up so best to carry a sarong with you.
The Rock Face: The climb becomes steeper and more challenging as you approach the rock face. Hikers must navigate a series of boulders and rocky steps, which can be demanding but are manageable for most visitors with a moderate level of fitness. Just need to take breaks and soak in the fresh air.

Tips for Visitors

Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to climb Pidurangala to avoid the midday heat and to enjoy the sunrise or sunset views.
What to Wear: Comfortable hiking shoes and light, breathable clothing are recommended. Don’t forget to bring water and sunscreen.
Respect the Site: As Pidurangala is still a place of worship, visitors should dress modestly and respect the cultural and religious significance of the site.
Only one pathway: Do note that there is only one passage or pathway leading to the summit in the last stages of the hike which also means it does get extremely crowded over a weekend or during a poya holiday which brings in a lot of the local community as well. During such times it is going to be tough to navigate these last sections of the hike since it can be accessed only via one route.
